Welcome to the online home of the Operation and Application of Stable Isotope Systems (OASIS) Lab! We are a laboratory based at the Centre for Earth Sciences (CEaS), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and being interdisciplinary is at the heart of what we do.

Since our inception, we have leveraged the stable isotopes of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen to address a broad spectrum of research questions in the fields of earth sciences, biology, human-ecology, and climate change. Some of these include mapping carbon-dioxide emissions over the city of Bengaluru, examining wildfire activity over Indian Himalayas, investigating heavy metal contamination in rivers, as well as reconstructing palaeo-environment using a wide variety of palaeoclimate archives. This has permitted a clearer understanding of when and how Earth’s flora and fauna changed over geological timescales, and the anthropogenic disturbances that have accelerated these changes in the recent past.

Further, employing sophisticated geochemical tools, such as that of carbonate clumped isotopes and triple oxygen isotopes, has afforded us insights into various earth system processes ranging from mantle evolution to the tracking of past hydroclimate variabilities.

Should you like to work with us, or have an interesting idea to share, we would love to hear from you; for we are always seeking newer model systems – in space and in time – to apply our tools to!
